Dental Contouring in Ashburton

Subtle reshaping of tooth edges — smoothing chips, evening out lengths, softening pointed canines. Quick, usually comfortable, and often more effective than people expect.

Small changes, big difference

Contouring removes tiny amounts of enamel to reshape a tooth’s edge. There’s no anaesthetic needed in most cases, it takes minutes, and the result is immediate.

It suits minor irregularities — a slightly chipped edge, one tooth marginally longer than its neighbour, a canine that looks a little sharp. It can’t fix crowding or significant misalignment; that’s what orthodontics is for.

What’s involved

Immediate result

Usually completed in a single short visit.

No anaesthetic needed

Only surface enamel is reshaped, so most people feel nothing at all.

Often combined

Frequently done alongside whitening or bonding as part of a broader plan.

The limit

Enamel doesn’t grow back, so we’re conservative. Larger changes are better handled with bonding or veneers.

Is contouring right for you?

Contouring suits healthy teeth with a small, specific issue in shape. Before we start, we check your enamel thickness and gums, and show you what will change.

It isn’t the right choice if enamel is thin, teeth are already worn from grinding, or the issue is position rather than shape. In those cases bonding, veneers or Invisalign usually suit better.

Common questions

Will my teeth be more sensitive?

Only a small amount of surface enamel is smoothed, so most people notice no change in sensitivity.

How long does it take?

Usually a single short appointment.

Is it permanent?

Yes. Enamel doesn’t grow back, which is why we plan carefully and keep changes small.

Can it be combined with whitening?

Yes. Many people whiten first, then fine-tune the shape.

Health funds: we’re a preferred provider for Bupa Members First Platinum, HCF More for Teeth and nib First Choice, and we claim on the spot through HICAPS for all other funds. Cover depends on your policy, waiting periods and limits. Call (03) 9885 7588 and we’ll check before you book.

Who contouring may suit

  • A pointed or slightly long canine.
  • Small chips or rough spots on the edge of a front tooth.
  • Front teeth with slightly uneven edges or lengths.
  • Minor overlaps where a corner sticks out a little.

Contouring works on small changes only. Enamel does not grow back, so only a very thin layer can be removed. Larger changes need a different approach.

Contouring, bonding or veneers?

Contouring takes a little away. Bonding adds tooth-coloured material to build a tooth up or fill a chip. Veneers cover the whole front surface. If a tooth is crooked rather than uneven, Invisalign or braces may suit better.

What happens at your appointment

  • Your dentist checks your bite and the thickness of your enamel. An X-ray may be taken.
  • The planned change is marked and explained before anything is removed.
  • The edge is gently shaped with fine polishing tools.
  • Your bite is checked, then the tooth is smoothed and polished.

It is usually done in one short visit. Many people need no anaesthetic, because only the outer enamel is touched.

After contouring

Some people notice mild sensitivity for a day or two. The tooth may feel different to your tongue at first. There is no special aftercare beyond normal brushing and cleaning between your teeth. If you grind your teeth, a night splint may help stop new chips.

More questions about dental contouring

Can the change be undone?

No. Enamel that is removed does not grow back. That is why your dentist removes only a small amount and shows you the plan first. If more change is needed later, bonding can add shape back.

Will contouring make my teeth weaker?

Done carefully, the amount removed is very small, and the tooth keeps its enamel layer. It is not suitable where the enamel is already thin or worn. Your dentist checks this before starting.

Can I have contouring with other cosmetic treatment?

Yes. It is often combined with whitening or bonding. If you plan to whiten, it is usually done first so any bonding can be matched to the new shade. See our cosmetic dentistry page for the full range of options.
