Your Child’s First Dental Visit

We recommend that children have their first dental check-up by around their first birthday or when their first tooth appears.

The first visit is generally about becoming familiar with the dental environment. Depending on your child’s age and cooperation, we may look at their teeth, count their teeth and introduce them to the dental chair and equipment.

If your child needs treatment, we will explain what is recommended and discuss the options with you.

Starting dental visits early can help establish regular dental care and allow potential oral health concerns to be identified early.

Children’s Dental Services

Depending on your child’s individual needs, we may provide:

  • Dental check-ups and examinations
  • Professional cleans
  • Fluoride applications
  • Fissure sealants for adult molars
  • Fillings
  • Sports mouthguards
  • Monitoring of adult teeth as they develop and erupt
  • Assessment of developing bite concerns
  • Referral to an orthodontist where appropriate
Our focus is on helping children develop good oral health habits and providing appropriate dental care as they grow.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule

What Is the CDBS?

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule, or CDBS, provides benefits for eligible children for a range of basic dental services.

Benefit Amount

For 2026, eligible children may have up to $1,158 available over two consecutive calendar years for covered dental services.

Eligibility

Eligibility depends on factors including the child’s age, Medicare eligibility and whether the child or their parent, carer or guardian receives certain government payments. Please note that not all dental services are covered by the CDBS.

Bulk Billing &
Next Steps

Eligible CDBS services at our practice are bulk billed. If you think your child may be eligible, contact our team with your child’s Medicare details and we can discuss eligibility and available services with you.

Helping Nervous Children Feel Comfortable

Some children feel nervous or uncertain about visiting the dentist. We understand that every child responds differently.

Our approach includes:

  • Explaining what we are going to do before we do it
  • Using language that is appropriate for the child’s age
  • Allowing parents or carers to stay in the room
  • Giving children time to become comfortable with the environment
  • Stopping and trying again at another visit if a child is not ready

For children who are particularly anxious or require more involved treatment, additional options may be discussed where appropriate.
