What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

You may need urgent dental care if you are experiencing:

Severe or persistent toothache or dental pain
A knocked-out or broken tooth
A lost filling or crown
A dental abscess or facial swelling
Bleeding following a dental extraction
A broken or lost denture
A dental injury following a fall, accident or sporting injury

What To Do Before You Arrive

Knocked-Out Adult Tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown rather than the root. If it is dirty, gently rinse it with milk. If possible, try to place it back into the socket without touching the root.

If you cannot replace it, keep the tooth in milk and seek dental care as soon as possible. Ideally, an adult tooth should be assessed within an hour of being knocked out.

Broken or Chipped Tooth

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. A cold compress applied to the outside of the face may help with swelling.

Toothache

You can use over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging, provided it is suitable for you.

Do not place aspirin directly against your tooth or gums.

Facial Swelling

If swelling is affecting your breathing or swallowing, seek immediate medical attention at your nearest emergency department.

What Will an Emergency Appointment Cost?

Emergency appointments will generally begin with an assessment of your symptoms and examination of the affected area. X-rays may also be recommended where clinically appropriate.

We will explain the recommended treatment and associated fees before treatment proceeds.

Eligible patients may be able to claim on the spot through HICAPS, depending on their level of health fund cover.
